Energy Assistance- Income eligible households at risk of going without heat during the winter may apply for Connecticut Energy Assistance or the Contingency Heating Assistance Program. Programs provide deliverable fuel and also replace inoperable heating systems or repair, clean, tune and test systems. The Congregational Church of Union, the Town of Union and the Union Free Public Library are jointly calling for donations of non-perishable foods or grocery gift cards to help folks have a good Christmas holiday meal. TAX COLLECTOR’S NOTICE All persons liable to pay taxes to the Town of Union are hereby notified that I have a warrant to collect a tax of 23.68 mils on a dollar on the Grand List of October 1, 2024. The second payment of Real Estate and Personal Property taxes and the Motor Vehicle Supplemental List taxes are due and payable January 1, 2026. Union was the last town to be settled east of the Connecticut River, largely because of its rough terrain and poor soil. In 1633, John Oldham, an adventurer from Massachusetts, obtained specimens of black lead or graphite from the Indians. During the Revolutionary War Governor Trumbull tapped this valuable resource for use at cannon foundries. On July 1, 1720 the General Assembly sold 12,500 acres to 12 proprietors for 307 pounds, comprising the area that is now Union.
