Attendance:

Daily attendance is a key factor in student success, thus any absence from school is an educational loss to the student. Please try to schedule appointments and family activities during vacations or after school hours.

Absentee Calls: When a child is absent, please call the school before 9 a.m. When your child returns to school, a note is required with a date, the dates absent, and the reason for absence signed by a parent or guardian.

Excused Absences: Students are excused when they are absent for the following reasons:

Unexcused Absences: Any absence outside of those listed above is unexcused. Four unexcused absences in a month or ten unexcused absences in a school year are considered by law to indicate a habitual truant. The school will work with parents to prevent truancy. Please note that taking your child out of school for a week for vacation is not an excused absence and is considered truancy in the law. Learning experiences that occur in the classroom are considered to be meaningful and essential components of the learning process. Time lost from class tends to be irretrievable in terms of opportunity for instructional interaction.

Make Up Work: If the absence is excused, it is the student's responsibility to make up all work missed as soon as possible (students are generally given one day for each day out to make up work). Failure to do so may result in a reduced grade. Teachers will not provide make up, class work, or after school tutorial time for unexcused absences. This is Board policy.

Late arrival and early dismissal: Students are encouraged to arrive on time. If a student is late, he or she must check in with the office. If a parent needs to pick up a student early for an appointment, please send a note ahead and then sign out the student in the office.

Bus Transportation:

Bus or transportation changes: If the student is going to any place other than his/her normal destination at the close of school, a note is required. The note must be signed by the parent and the school secretary. If a student is going to be picked up by a parent, a note should be sent to the school.

Bus rules: The same good behavior is expected on the bus as is expected during the school day. Students must be respectful to the driver and follow directions. Students are expected to stay seated and to behave in a manner that is not distracting to the driver. Riding the bus is a privilege and students who do not behave on the bus may have this privilege revoked.

Health Services:

Emergency Information Forms: Please complete the emergency forms that are sent out at the beginning of school and return them as soon as possible. Please remember to call the school if your work number or an emergency contact changes. Students will only be released to parents or to those emergency contacts that parents have indicated so please keep this information up-to-date in case your child needs to be picked up in an emergency.

Medications: Medications that are to be given during the school day (including over-the-counter medications) must have a physician/advanced practice registered nurse, physician assistant, or dentist's written order along with the written permission from the student's parent or guardian. A permission request slip for acetaminophen will be sent home upon request. The school nurse shall set up a plan and schedule to ensure medication is given as prescribed. The medication must be delivered directly to the nurse by the parent or responsible adult. In the absence of the school nurse, an administrator and those teachers who have been properly trained may administer medication to students.

Health Screenings: Height, weight, and hearing and vision screening are done on all students in grades K - 8 on a yearly basis. Postural screening for scoliosis is done annually for students in grades 5 - 8. Parental permission is assumed for all screening and the parent will be notified in writing of any findings that require attention.

Health Requirements: State law requires complete primary immunizations and a health assessment prior to school entrance. An immunization update and additional health assessment are required in the 6th grade. The nurse will send out information and forms at the end of 5th grade.

Nurse's Days: The nurse will generally be in school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please call first to be sure she is here if you are bringing medications or need to see her.

Lunch and Milk:

Lunches are eaten in the classroom. Time is also set aside for a morning snack. Nutritious lunches (as well as breakfast) have been proven essential for optimal performance in the classroom. Milk may be purchased for lunch ($ .10) or orange juice for $.30 per day.

Babysitting:

Babysitting is provided by 7th and 8th graders for the U.S.A. meeting. This community service is one way that students can give back to the U.S.A. for all it does for them. It is an important responsibility. No more than 4 students should sign up for babysitting at a particular meeting. Students who have had any suspensions or after school detentions in the previous month will not be allowed to baby-sit.
