1. Superintendent/Principal Update: The power at the school was out from Tuesday to Friday of last week due to a tropical storm. The fire alarm system needed reprogramming following the return of power. Preparation continues for the start of the new school year. Cleaning is completed and an inventory of supplies is underway and an order has been placed with through SERC for masks and PPE.
A new survey will be sent to parents regarding in-person versus remote learning and transportation intentions so that administration and staff can plan appropriately for classroom needs, teaching needs, and transportation needs. State and Federal funding amounts for COVID-19 needs are still not available to school administrations. A State Dept. of Education (SDE) webinar is anticipated for next week regarding funding amounts available to school districts.
S. Jackopsic and L. Demurjian, RN attended Dept. of Public Health (DPH) and Local Health District webinars regarding the opening of schools.
2. Old Business:
a. Reopening Update: Some districts are opening with a hybrid model since the number of students prevents them from safely opening totally in-person. The Reopening Advisory Group met this week and reviewed current SDE and DPH guidelines should a student or staff member in a given “pod” be exposed to or test positive for COVID-19. However, there is yet to be SDE or DPH guidance issued regarding multiple positive test cases. School districts are urged to work with their local health districts. Outdoor classrooms when possible are recommended.
CT Assn. of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS) has provided a distance learning template for use in school systems. Buses will be cleaned between runs to prevent infection. The Union School Association is offering room parents to assist as needed. The Reopening Advisory Group plans additional meetings.
b. Emergency policy (2nd reading): The second reading of the policy “Operations of Schools During COVID-19 Pandemic” was completed.
3. New business
a. Calendar – additional revisions: Given the numerous situations that staff must plan for and react to, S. Jackopsic is recommending that the Wednesdays in September be changed to half-days to allow for additional staff planning time. He will be putting together an afternoon program and transportation for students whose parents are not available for child care due to work obligations on those half-days. J. Garden made a motion to adopt the revision of half-day Wednesdays in September to the calendar. L. Roberts seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously carried
b. Personnel update: S. Jackopsic will be meeting next week with the First Selectman and municipal staff who are interested in a job share between the town and the board of education secretarial position.
